edro Zamora was a cast member of the reality based MTV program The Real World. He used the show as a platform to advance understanding of gay people and people with AIDS. Sadly, he died soon after the season he appeared in ended. His death and noble life, inspired me to paint this portrait and to write Eulogy for Pedro Zamora. As an artistic exercise, this work is a real leap forward. For the first time, I undertook a near full figure subject, and an elaborate real place setting. Also, I'd never used a paper other than white or some variation before. Red was selected to be incorporated into his shirt and the bridge. The ragged edge is another first time experiment that I really like and intend to use again. It gives the viewer the feeling they are looking at the scene through a hole, creating a 3 dimensional depth. Though the painting has a few problems that bug me still, for example the right hand looks a little bigger than the left, I'm proud of the ambition of the composition. |
