arrett is the son of my close friend
Deb Terrill. A week before Deb's last birthday, I found myself without a gift for her.
She's a person of sophisticated tastes, so I'm always a bit intimidated buying things for
her. My tastes run to the tacky. At the same time, I was looking about for a subject to
draw after emerging from a year long dry spell. I didn't feel confident enough to try a
full sized pastel painting, so I had a color pencil work in mind. Doing Deb's son killed
the proverbial two birds with one artwork. The tears and thanks at the presentation
certainly made this the most emotionally received of any of my works. Jarrett is also the
first portrait I did using a computer scanned version of the source photo. The outcome was
amazing. Using my usual grid method, except on the computer monitor, resulted in an
outstanding likeness. The background was a bit of a struggle, since I lack experience
working in color pencil. However the animated quality of the greens reflects
the subject well.
